School Vision & Values
A friendly, values-driven school where boys strive to reach their potential...
We believe that there is no single story of masculinity, that there are infinite ways to be a boy, all of them worth celebrating, protecting, nurturing and growing. We want a Hitchin Boy to be Strong and True. Strong by having a strength of character, purpose and resolve and True to themselves and others. They should leave us as smart, skilled and kind and thus go out to build lives of purpose, impact and service.
We do this by creating the conditions in which they can discover their purpose and flourish, creating a school where every boy is known for who he is today, and all he can be in the future. We teach our students that it means something to be a “Hitchin Boy”, we tell them that there is a place laid for them at this table and they just have to find it, but they belong here. We tell them that they are heirs to a 400-year-old legacy, and they have a duty to uphold values that have been tried and tested across centuries. In an increasingly complex world where we seem to be reifying the individual at the cost of the whole; we are different in that we challenge our boys to remember their duty to themselves by considering their duty to others.
The outcome of all the above is that wonderful things happen here because the boys, their parents and our highly skilled staff are invested and committed to making those wonderful things happen. It is an uncommon school that marries the traditional and the modern; put simply “It is Great to be a Hitchin Boy (or their parent).’
I would urge you to read the Hitchin Boys' School's Development Plan or our Good Schools Guide review to be fully persuaded that this is a truly uncommon school.
