School Based Routes Teacher Training 2027/28 Recruitment Cycle (For September 2027 entry)
Hitchin Boys’ School (HBS) proudly acts as the lead partner for the North Herts School-Based Routes Consortium - a partnership of four local secondary schools including Hitchin Boys' School, The Priory School, The Highfield School (Scholars Education Trust), and Fearnhill School.
We work in close partnership with the University of Hertfordshire (UH) to deliver a high-quality route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), combining immersive classroom teaching with expert university instruction.
Why train with us?
Trainees spend 4 days per week gaining hands-on classroom experience in their host school, complemented by 1 day per week of centre-based training at the University of Hertfordshire’s Hatfield campus (totaling 24 weeks of school placements across the year).
Trainees also benefit from 14 dedicated subject-specific training sessions led by experienced subject experts each year, designed to build deep subject knowledge, classroom pedagogy, and practical teaching strategies.

4th in the UK for Education – Guardian University Guide 2027
1st for Teaching Quality in Education – The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027
3rd for Education – Daily Mail University Guide 2027
Ofsted Inspected (March 2026): 9 out of 10 inspection grades judged Strong, with the remaining grade judged Expected.
Training routes offered:
We offer both full-time and part-time options to accommodate different personal and professional commitments:
Employment-Based (Salaried) Route: On successful completion, trainees receive a fully certificated Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) qualification.
Fee-Paying PGCE (Unsalaried) Route: Trainees achieve QTS alongside a PGCE, which includes 60 Master’s-level credits providing a direct pathway toward a full Master’s degree in Education.
Tuition Fee: £9,790
