School Based Routes Teacher Training 2027/28 Recruitment Cycle (For September 2027 entry)

Hitchin Boys’ School works closely with the Department for Education’s School Based Routes Training Programme for graduates, which offers a route to achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). HBS is the lead partner for the North Herts School Based Routes Consortium - four secondary schools covering the areas of Letchworth and Hitchin, and comprising Hitchin Boys' School, The Priory School, The Highfield School (part of the Scholars Education Trust since January 2024) and Fearnhill School.

We work in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire (UH) as our nominated provider for School Based Training. Students spend 4 days per week at their host school and travel one day per week to the University of Herts Hatfield campus for "centre-based training".

On successful completion of the course, students on the employment based (salaried) route will receive a fully-certificated QTS qualification. Students on the fee-paying PGCE (unsalaried) route will receive QTS with PGCE (and 60 masters level credits). Fees for the School Based Training unsalaried (PGCE) route are £9790.

The School Based Routes Training application cycle (for commencement of training in September 2026) opens on Tuesday 29^th September 2026, for applicants to view vacancies, and from Tuesday 6^th October 2025 for applications to be made. The recruitment cycle closes in June 2027, however we reserve the right to close vacancies early if they are filled before June.
