Former Pupil Returns to Inspire the Next Generation of Sports Journalists
Pupils from Year 11 and Year 12 at Hitchin Boys' School were recently given a unique insight into the world of sports journalism during an inspiring talk by BBC Senior Football Journalist, Alex Bysouth.
Alex, who once sat in the same classrooms as the pupils he addressed, shared his career journey and passion for football writing. After leaving Hitchin Boys' School, he went on to study Sport and Physical Education at the University of Bedfordshire before forging a successful career with the BBC. He is also the author of Football for the Soul, a book that takes readers on a captivating journey through European football culture.
The visit was organised as part of the school’s commitment to showcasing the wide range of career pathways available to pupils beyond their studies. During the talk, Alex spoke openly about his experiences in the media industry, the realities of sports journalism, and the importance of building a profile and getting work seen by an audience.
Year 12 student Sam reflected on the event, saying: “It was interesting and informative to hear from Alex Bysouth. He offered useful advice about getting into sports journalism and the advantages of having your work seen by an audience.”
The session proved both motivating and informative, leaving pupils with a clearer understanding of how their interests could translate into future careers. The school hopes to welcome Alex back again in the future to continue inspiring aspiring journalists and sports enthusiasts alike.
